| Last
month I was participating in a day of prayer and fasting
with my ministry partners from Unchained Heart Ministries.
It was about 12:30 PM and I was starving. All I could
focus on was my need for food. In an effort to occupy
my mind, I decided to go get the mail.
It was
an ordinary mail day - lots of junk mail. One of the pieces
of mail was from Food for the Poor. Because I've given
to them in the past, I regularly get mail from them. Normally,
I recycle immediately. This day, however, I decided to
open the envelope.
Inside
was a story of a poor mother of 3 children. The mother
shared that most days her children go to school hungry.
She sits on the streets begging for money so her children
can eat. I was instantly reminded of my hungry tummy,
but suddenly realized that my hunger is voluntary. This
mom and her children have no choice about whether or not
they will eat. In that moment, I was moved to contribute
what I could to help feed these hungry children.
Sometimes
we get so caught up in our own problems (or hunger) that
we forget about all the ways we can give back to this
world, and all the benefits we receive in doing so. You
don't have to give money and you don't have to give to
the poor - although that is good.
You can
give your time, kindness, love, talents, skills, smile,
positive words, forgiveness, grace or any other gift to
anybody in this world. The benefits to other people are
obvious, but what about the benefits you will receive:
- You will be blessed with abundance
- You will have a sense of fulfillment
- You will have an opportunity to further explore
your life purpose
- Loving others increases your self-esteem
- You will have a knowing that you are doing your
part to make the world a better place
- Other people will follow your lead
How do
I know these things are true? Because I have the best
job in the world - a job that enables me to give back
to moms like yourself all over the world. What a blessing! |
