| According
to Jerome F. Kiffer, a writer for WebMD, stress that continues
without relief can lead to a condition called distress
-- a negative stress reaction. Distress can disturb the
body's internal balance or equilibrium -- leading to physical
symptoms including headaches, upset stomach, elevated
blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping. Research
suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen certain
symptoms or diseases.
One way
to begin eliminating stress from your life is to keep
a stress diary. In this diary, you can keep a record of
the minor and major stresses you encounter each day. The
essential elements to record are date, time, stressor,
a stress rating that tells what level of stress you experienced,
and what your reaction was - physically and emotionally.
Some of the stressors might include an argument with your
spouse, child misbehavior, job stress, traffic, or financial
worries. Typical reactions are festering inside, outward
expression of anger, crying, worry, and any number of
physical reactions.
Keep
your stress diary for a minimum of one month. Look for
ongoing stressors that repeat themselves. Develop a plan
to eliminate or minimize these stressors so your health
is not negatively affected. Practice stress-relieving
techniques like deep breathing, taking breaks, exercise,
journaling, meditation, yoga and prayer. |
