The Essence of "The Secret"

This month's coaching corner focuses on the areas of Thoughts and Beliefs, Feelings and Dreams and Passions.

The marketing agents behind "The Secret" are brilliant.  I just recently bought the DVD called "The Secret".  I don't watch much TV, but even I've heard all the hype regarding "The Secret".  When two of my best friends started raving about this movie, I got a little curious and spent the $30.00 to own this popular DVD.  In the last 30 days, there have been 440,599 internet searches on the word "secret", 26,518 searches on "DVD secret", 24,654 searches on "movie secret" and 17,423 searches on "oprah secret".  The Secret is sweeping the world!

Are you dying to know what "The Secret" is?  I'll save you the $30.00 and tell you.  "The Secret" is basically a well marketed movie about the law of attraction.  The law of attraction states that you attract that which you put out to the universe.  For example, if you focus and think about how much debt you have, you will attract more debt to you.  The law of attraction suggests that if you want to be free from debt that you should focus on prosperity.  Even good parenting experts use the law of attraction when suggesting how to change negative child behavior.  The more you focus on and discipline the negative behavior, the more negative behavior you will attract.  The law of attraction proposes that you focus on the behavior you want.  Notice and reward the positive behavior and you will receive more positive behavior from your children.

"The Secret" makes several good points.  There are two big takeaways that I want to share with you.  The first is the concept of "Ask - Believe - Receive".  What is it that you want?  Is it more friends, a better job, or good health?  Ask for it.  "Ask who?" you inquire. "The Secret" suggests you ask the Universe.  Personally, I can't talk to an empty vast space that has no face.  For me, I ask God - the creator of this Universe.  Now, what do you believe about getting what you want?  Most people have no problems asking for what they want, but many do not believe they will get it.  There is a lack of faith, an abundance of fear, and an overall feeling that we don't deserve good things.  My philosophy is that if our requests are aligned with God, and we truly believe (in our heart and soul) we are worthy of receiving what we want, we will receive.

The other powerful practices we must engage in to manifest our desires are gratitude and visualization.  Having and feeling gratitude for everything you have today is critical.  I am convinced the success of my business is directly related to the gratitude I feel for every blessing God sends my way.  I am truly thankful for every phone call, email and client I receive.  And because I am grateful, He sends me more.  On those days when my heart is not grateful, I ask God to help me remember to check my heart and attitude.  Next, visualize what it is you want.  Feel it with every fiber of your being.  If you want to lose 20 pounds, close your eyes, and feel yourself 20 pounds lighter.  What do you look like?  What are you wearing?  How are you feeling in that moment?  Visualize feeling confident, free and healthy!  Engage in visualization exercises everyday.

So, there you have it.  The essence of "The Secret".  Today, I am going to ask God for happy and cooperative children.  As a loving and caring mom, I believe I deserve that and I will receive it.  I am thankful for whom my children are today, and everyday I will visualize and feel the pleasure of having cooperative and happy children.  What about you?  What do you want?
